Is your PC taking forever to start up? Programs freezing? You’re not alone. Most slow computer problems can be fixed without spending a dime on upgrades.
Why Is My PC Slow?
Common causes:
- Too many startup programs — apps launching automatically
- Full hard drive — less than 15% free space
- Background processes — hidden programs eating resources
- Outdated drivers — especially graphics and chipset
- Malware or bloatware — unwanted software running
- Fragmented hard drive — only affects HDDs, not SSDs
Quick Wins (5 Minutes)
1. Restart Your Computer
Sounds obvious, but many people just put their PC to sleep. A full restart clears memory and stops background processes.
How:
- Click Start → Power → Restart (not Sleep)
- Do this at least once a week
2. Close Unnecessary Browser Tabs
Each tab uses memory. If you have 20+ tabs open, your PC is working overtime.
Check your tabs:
- Chrome: Press Shift + Esc to see memory usage per tab
- Close tabs you’re not using
- Bookmark pages for later instead
3. Check for Windows Updates
Updates include performance fixes and security patches.
How:
- Press
Windows Key + I → Update & Security
- Click “Check for updates”
- Install all available updates
- Restart when prompted
Disable Startup Programs (10 Minutes)
Most programs add themselves to startup without asking. This slows down boot time.
How to disable:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Click the “Startup” tab
- Right-click programs you don’t need at startup
- Select “Disable”
Safe to disable:
- Spotify, iTunes, Discord
- Cloud storage (Dropbox, OneDrive) if you don’t use them daily
- Adobe updaters
- Manufacturer bloatware (HP, Dell utilities)
DO NOT disable:
- Antivirus software
- Graphics drivers (Intel, NVIDIA, AMD)
- Sound drivers (Realtek)
After disabling, restart your PC and notice the difference.
Free Up Disk Space (15 Minutes)
A full hard drive drastically slows everything down. Aim for at least 15% free space.
Run Disk Cleanup
- Search “Disk Cleanup” in the Start menu
- Select your C: drive
- Check these boxes:
- Temporary files
- Downloads (if you’ve backed up important files)
- Recycle Bin
- Thumbnails
- Windows Update Cleanup
- Click “Clean up system files”
- Wait for cleanup to finish
Uninstall Unused Programs
- Press
Windows Key + I → Apps
- Sort by “Size” to see the biggest programs
- Uninstall anything you don’t use:
- Old games
- Trial software
- Duplicate programs (multiple PDF readers, etc.)
Tip: If you’re unsure about a program, Google it first before uninstalling.
Stop Background Processes
Hidden apps running in the background can slow your PC without you knowing.
Check What’s Running
- Open Task Manager (
Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
- Click “Processes” tab
- Sort by “CPU” or “Memory”
- Look for unfamiliar programs using lots of resources
Disable Background Apps
- Press
Windows Key + I → Privacy
- Scroll down to “Background apps”
- Turn off apps you don’t need running constantly
Good to keep on:
- Antivirus
- Cloud backup (if you use it)
- Messaging apps (if you need notifications)
Turn off:
- Store apps you never use
- Weather, news, tips apps
Update Drivers (10 Minutes)
Outdated drivers can cause slowdowns, freezes, and crashes.
Automatic Way (Easiest)
- Press
Windows Key + X → Device Manager
- Right-click any device with a yellow warning icon
- Select “Update driver” → “Search automatically”
Manual Way (More Thorough)
- Visit your PC manufacturer’s website (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.)
- Go to “Support” or “Drivers”
- Enter your PC model number
- Download latest chipset, graphics, and network drivers
- Install them one by one, restarting after each
Priority drivers:
- Graphics (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel)
- Chipset
- Network adapter
Adjust Visual Effects
Windows uses fancy animations that look nice but slow older PCs.
How to disable:
- Search “Performance” in Start menu
- Click “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows”
- Select “Adjust for best performance”
- OR customize: uncheck unnecessary effects like:
- Animations when minimizing/maximizing
- Fade or slide effects
- Shadows under windows
This makes Windows look less fancy but run much faster.
Scan for Malware
Malware can secretly use your CPU and memory.
Free options:
- Windows Defender (built-in): Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Quick scan
- Malwarebytes Free: Download from malwarebytes.com, run full scan
Warning signs of malware:
- Unfamiliar programs in Task Manager
- Browser homepage changed without permission
- Pop-ups even when browser is closed
- PC slows down suddenly
Upgrade (When Free Fixes Aren’t Enough)
If your PC is still slow after trying everything above, consider:
Best upgrades for speed:
- SSD (Solid State Drive) — Biggest impact, ~$50-100 for 500GB
- More RAM — 8GB minimum, 16GB ideal, ~$30-60
- Clean dust from inside — Overheating slows performance
Maintenance Schedule
Weekly:
- Restart your computer
- Close unused browser tabs
Monthly:
- Run Disk Cleanup
- Check for Windows updates
- Scan for malware
Every 3 Months:
- Review startup programs
- Uninstall unused software
- Update drivers
