Part 2: Connectivity & Peripheral Problems (WiFi, Audio, USB, Printer)
👈 Start with Part 1: Computer Freezing & Slow Performance
→ Then read Part 3: System Crashes & Updates
This guide covers connectivity and external device issues that often have simple hardware fixes.
Problem #1: WiFi Keeps Disconnecting
Symptoms: Internet drops every few minutes, need to reconnect, slow speeds that vary wildly
Why it happens:
- WiFi router too far away or blocked
- Router firmware outdated
- Driver conflict with network card
- Too many devices connected
- Interference from other devices
Fix: Restart & Reposition
Step 1: The Classic Fix (fixes 50% of issues)
- Restart your router:
- Unplug power cord
- Wait 30 seconds (while unplugged)
- Plug back in
- Wait 2 minutes for it to fully boot
- Restart your computer
- Try connecting again
Step 2: Move Closer to Router
- Walk closer with your laptop
- If connection improves: It’s a signal problem (move router or computer)
- Keep router centralized, elevated, and away from walls
Step 3: Remove Interference
- Move router away from:
- Microwave (major interference)
- Cordless phones
- Baby monitors
- Large metal objects
- If these are unavoidable: Switch to 5GHz band (faster but shorter range)
Step 4: Update WiFi Driver
- Windows: Press Windows key → Search Device Manager
- Find Network adapters → Expand
- Right-click your WiFi adapter → Update driver
- Choose Search automatically for drivers
- Restart computer
Mac:
- Go to Apple menu → System Preferences → Network
- Click WiFi → Advanced → TCP/IP tab
- Click Renew DHCP Lease
Step 5: Update Router Firmware
- Visit your router manufacturer’s website (TP-Link, Netgear, Linksys, etc.)
- Download latest firmware
- Log into router (usually 192.168.1.1 in browser)
- Find Firmware Update section
- Upload and install (router will restart — takes 5 min)
Pro tip: If drops are time-specific (always evening), might be WiFi congestion. Try changing channel in router settings (channels 1, 6, 11 on 2.4GHz have no overlap).
Problem #2: No Sound or Audio Issues
Symptoms: No sound from speakers or headphones, sound coming from wrong device, distorted audio, mic not working
Why it happens:
- Volume muted or turned down
- Wrong audio device selected
- Audio driver outdated or corrupted
- Headphone jack issue or Bluetooth connection problem
- Disabled in settings
Fix: Audio Troubleshooting Flow
Step 1: Check Volume First (sounds obvious but fixes 30% of cases)
- Check physical volume knob/buttons on speakers
- Check keyboard volume keys (Fn + volume up)
- Check Windows volume: Click speaker icon in taskbar → Make sure not muted, slider up
Step 2: Select Correct Audio Device
- Windows: Right-click speaker icon → Sound settings
- Scroll to Output → See list of devices
- Make sure correct one is selected:
- Speakers (laptop internal speakers)
- Headphones (if plugged in)
- HDMI output (if monitor/TV has speakers)
- Try each option to find which works
Mac:
- Apple menu → System Preferences → Sound → Output tab
- Select correct speaker option
- If not listed: Click Bluetooth icon → Reconnect headphones
Step 3: Update Audio Driver (Windows)
- Press Windows key → Device Manager
- Find Sound, video and game controllers
- Right-click → Update driver → Search automatically
- Restart computer
Step 4: Check if Muted in BIOS (advanced, for desktops)
- Some systems mute audio at BIOS level
- Restart → Press Del, F2, or F10 during boot (depends on motherboard)
- Look for HD Audio or Audio setting → Make sure Enabled
Step 5: Bluetooth Headphones Not Connecting
- Forget the device: Settings → Devices → Bluetooth → Your headphones → Remove device
- Put headphones in pairing mode (usually hold button 5 seconds until light flashes)
- Search for device again and connect
If still no sound: Test with YouTube video or system sounds. If you hear nothing even from system tests, likely hardware issue or needs technician.
Problem #3: USB Device Not Recognized
Symptoms: USB drive, phone, or printer plugged in but computer doesn’t see it, “Unknown Device” error
Why it happens:
- USB port is broken or dirty
- USB cable is damaged
- USB device driver not installed
- Device not compatible
- Computer needs USB port powered off/on
Fix: Identify & Connect Properly
Step 1: Try Different USB Ports
- Desktops: Try all USB ports (some might be broken)
- Laptops: Try both sides (some ports might be damaged)
- Use USB 3.0 port (blue colored) if device is USB 3.0 compatible
Step 2: Clean USB Connections
- Look at USB connector on both cable and computer port
- If dirty, use dry cotton swab to gently clean both sides
- Let air dry 30 seconds before plugging in
Step 3: Restart Computer with Device Plugged In
- Plug device in
- Restart computer
- Sometimes device installs drivers only on restart
Step 4: Install Device Driver (if Windows recognizes it as “Unknown Device”)
- Device Manager → Find Unknown Device
- Right-click → Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers
- Plug in USB device’s original CD or download drivers from manufacturer’s website
- Point to downloaded driver folder
- Restart
Step 5: Reset USB Ports (advanced)
- Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Right-click each USB device → Uninstall device
- Restart computer (Windows will reinstall USB drivers)
Step 6: Check Device Compatibility
- Ensure device works on other computers
- Some very old USB 2.0 devices don’t work on new USB 3.0-only ports
- Bring device to tech support with original cable to test
Problem #4: Printer Won’t Print
Symptoms: Print job sent but nothing prints, printer shows offline, print queue stuck
Why it happens:
- Printer not connected (WiFi or USB)
- Printer offline
- Print queue stuck with old job
- Driver outdated or missing
- Printer out of paper or ink
- Printer firewall blocking computer
Fix: Get Printer Printing Again
Step 1: Basic Checks
- Is printer powered on? Look for power light
- Is paper loaded? Check input tray
- Is ink/toner low? Check levels (color blinking lights usually mean replace cartridge)
- Is printer connected? Check WiFi icon on printer or USB cable plugged in
Step 2: Check Windows Print Queue
- Search Printers & Scanners in Start menu → Your printer → Open queue
- See stuck print jobs?
- Right-click job → Cancel
- If can’t cancel: Restart computer (clears queue)
Step 3: Restart Printer
- Turn off via power button
- Wait 30 seconds

- Wait 30 seconds for search
- If found: Click → Add device
- If not found: Click The printer I want isn’t listed → Find by IP address (check printer’s display screen for IP like 192.168.1.100)
Step 6: Reset Print Spooler Service (advanced)
- Services app (search in Start menu)
- Find Print Spooler
- Right-click → Restart
- Wait, then try printing
Pro tip: Before complex fixes, always power-cycle (turn off/on) both printer and computer. Fixes 40% of printer issues.
